  7. Sound Icon Maker is a program that converts sound files into Sound Icons for the Newton OS.

  11. Sound Icons are a sound "file format" for the Newton OS. See the Sound Icons Read Me file for more details.

  20. Requirements

  22. The current version of Sound Icon Maker requires MacOS 7.0 or greater.

  24. Sound Files
  25. -----------
  26. Sound Icon Maker accepts both System 7 Sound and AIFF sound files. However they must meet the following requirements:

  28. 1) Uncompressed sound samples
  29. 2) Monophonic (single channel)
  30. 3) 8 or 16 bit.
  31. 4) Standard sampling rates of 8000Hz, 8012Hz, 10800Hz, 11025Hz, 11127Hz, 21600Hz, 22050Hz, 22254Hz, or 44100Hz.

  33. Note that 21600Hz is the default sampling rate on MessagePad 2000s, and will optimally be played back. 10800Hz is the default and optimum sampling rate on the eMate 300s.

  37. Drag a sound file onto the Sound Icon Maker icon and drop it. Sound Icon Maker will create a new Sound Icon package file in the same directory as the sound file.

Sound Icon Maker loads the entire sound file into application RAM. Therefore you must allocate enough memory to Sound Icon Maker in order to convert sound files. As a general rule of thumb, Sound Icon Maker needs about 32k + the size of the sound file. Memory allocation is done in the Get Info... dialog box.

Sound Icon Maker is unlockable demonstration shareware. When unregistered, Sound Icon Maker will create Sound Icons with sound samples no longer than 12 kilobytes. If the sound sample is longer, the sound will be cut off. The length in time depends on the sampling rate and bit width of the sound file.
